Private Postsecondary and Proprietary Schools in New Mexico
The New Mexico Higher Education Department (Department) provides oversight of all “private postsecondary educational institutions” operating within the state of New Mexico, including
· academic, vocational, technical, business, professional, or
· other schools, colleges or universities, other organizations or persons offering courses, instruction, training or education from a physical site in New Mexico, through distance education, correspondence, or in person.
New Mexico law requires institutions that are not regionally accredited to be licensed with the Department and institutions that are regionally accredited to register with the Department to legally operate a private postsecondary educational institution.
New Mexico requires out-of-state institutions to register with the Department if they pay or compensate personnel to work in New Mexico for the purpose of recruiting students to enroll in the institution’s programs in other states.
