Purpose
The purpose of the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE)Loan-for-Service Program is to allow New Mexico students to enroll at selected out-of-state graduate or professional programs which are not offered at New Mexico public universities.
Exchange students receive preference in admission. They pay reduced levels of tuition: for most students, resident tuition in public institutions or reduced standard tuition at private schools. New Mexico pays a support fee to the admitting school to help cover the cost of students' education.
Fields supported by New Mexico are listed below.
Dentistry
Veterinary Medicine
As a condition of each loan, the student shall declare his/her intent to return to New Mexico to practice as a professional in their field of study.
For every year of service, a portion of the loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness. Penalties may be assessed if the service agreement is not satisfied.
How much is the award?
The award will equal the support fees designated for each program as determined by WICHE
Award may be renewable for up to four years
What are the eligibility requirements?
A resident who graduated from a New Mexico high school or resided in New Mexico for three consecutive years prior to application to the program.
Attend an eligible public or private school listed for Veterinary Medicine
How do I apply?
Step 1 |
Complete the WICHE Loan-for-Service Application and return all required documents to the New Mexico Higher Education Department |
Step 2 |
Submit letter of acceptance from each school |
Step 3 |
WICHE will rank each candidate and provide list to New Mexico to consider for funding |
Renewal Applicants
If you have already been accepted into the WICHE Loan-for-Service program you will be required to submit a
WICHE Loan-for-Service Renewal Application and required documents to the New Mexico Higher Education Department each year by June 1 to secure funding for the following academic year.
When is the deadline?
New applications must be postmarked by October 14, 2011.
Renewal applications must be postmarked by July 2, 2012.
