The New Mexico Higher Education Department is charged to license private post-secondary institutions operating in the state. The Department does not regulate or accredit the programs offered by these institutions. National and regional accrediting associations set the standards of quality for institutions nationally or regionally accredited. A listing of nationally and regionally accredited schools and the corresponding accrediting agencies can be found at www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation. Applicable New Mexico State Statutes are as follows:
Private Institutions operating with a "presence" in New Mexico
Private Institutions operating from a location other than New Mexico and actively recruiting students in New Mexico
The Department may grant exemption status from licensure or registration requirements to an institution meeting at least one criterion permitted in state statute.
Private Post-Secondary Institutions Operating Under the Out-Of-State Proprietary School Act
